In the year 1897, along the Yukon River in Alaska, thousands of men were digging for gold. Thousands more were rushing to the Yukon to make money but these men needed big, strong dogs with thick coats. In Alaska strong dogs did the heavy work. Teams of dogs pulled sleds over the snow. All over the West, dogs were sold, and sent to Alaska. Buck, Judge Miller's big dog was in great danger, but he did not know it.
Buck's father was a big St. Bernard. His mother was a shepherd. Buck was four years old and weighed one hundred and forty pounds. Buck lived in California on the Miller ranch. He was a big outdoor dog with a strong body and long, thick fur. He hunted with Judge Miller's sons and ran freely over the ranch. Everyone loved him except one of Judge Miller's workers.
Otto-Classics Graded Readers Series are outstanding classics written by famous writers. The language and vocabulary in the books are controlled and simplified by specialist ELT authors and compilers according to Common European Framework so that they can be easily understood by new learners of English.
Depending on the eight levels from A1 to B2+, the longer stories are divided into a number of chapters and every chapter has its own activities. Some of the activities in the books are meant to be done in pairs. You may work with a partner to solve problems and design projects that reflect not only your own thinking but also new ideas you and your mates will discover by working in groups.
